Note the "youth" of the audience. Seriously it's good to see younger folk playing these days. I think I broke the old mould, I used to play in the 1970s but retired long ago.

A workmate invited me to accompany him to one of our Sports Clubs in Chingford where he was representing his district in a match. He was attempting to give me an interest in the game. I was just happy to sit and watch with a few pints from the bar.
We got to the venue early and the rink was free although there was a match being played further along.
I was persuaded to have a few practice 'ends' by my mate and I foolishly agreed.
Having bowled the jack to the other end old Frank instructed me about the bias on the woods.
I sent the first wood hurtling but got the bias on the wrong side.
My powerful shot arced the wrong way and smashed into a cluster of woods on the adjoining rink where they were playing their match.
Red face and apologies from me and purple faces and blue language from them I retired to the bar never to pick up a wood again.

You'd love Crown Green bowls then, RC, especially when played on public greens in parks (where there can be large numbers of people all playing at the same time). There are no rinks, with whomever is delivering the jack being permitted to place it wherever he likes on the green.
So you might have one group playing from top left to bottom right, with another playing from top right to bottom left, others playing straight up and down or straight across, and so on.
A green in a public park might have a dozen or so matches all taking place simultaneously (and with all of those matches constantly changing the direction that they're bowling in), so collisions are far from uncommon!

My dad was steward at a bowling, tennis and social club for over 20 yrs so I grew up with crown green bowls. When I see people playing on flat surfaces and in lanes it makes me laugh. Someone even moves the jack into the centre of the lane once it has been bowled. They are missing out on the fun of several matches being played at the same time and crossing over the green. Crown green or nothing for me.
