In future stretcher bearer maybe ought initially to provide cover (4)
I get that the answer is HOOD but can anyone parse it for me please? I thought it might be O (ought initially) in HOD but don't see how we get to HOD from the rest of the clue.
Thanks

Or an individual brick that has been laid lengthways. That explains the "in future" bit - while they are in the hod they are not yet stretchers or (I now learn) headers. Tricky parsing if you ask me.
