I reckon my relative is confused..he is of the older generation and was in the merchant navy (aha!) has been married several times, and says porn is 'his hobby'.

I only found out about this particular hobby by accident, and I know for a fact it is causing considerable strain in his marriage. I *think* he had several homosexual/ladyboy encounters whilst in Bangkok.

The trouble with this one is that we would probably understand it more if he were to just come out & say he is gay. It's difficult to explain, as there are lots of issues I don't really want to get into on this site.
