Dog chases lorries
5 Answers
I have a 2 year old border terrier, who it seems never wants to grow up, and whenever I take him for a walk near a busy road he barks like crazy at passing lorries, buses or motorcycles.
The other day he was off his lead on the field when a lorry drove past on the road which is not that close, and he shot after it chasing it down the road totaly ignoring my commands to come.
Why does he do this? and what can I do to stop him?
He also doesnt like pushbikes but is not as bad with them.

try walking him by a busy road( obviously make sure he's secure) and if he tries to growl or take off after a lorry ect grab his attention by turning him about, that worked for my dogs, all 3 of them liked to play with traffic i just cant figure out how to stop them knocking people off their bycycles!!

Both my last two dogs strained on the leash at passing lorries and cars etc, but gradually grew out of it with a bit of telling off, regular exposure to trafic seems to get them used to it quicker, it always seemed worse when the roads were wet, as the noise was increased.
I find getting them used to push bikes takes a bit longer, letting your dog have a snff of one on occaisions may help him to realise they have nothing to fear.

When I was growing up, we had a fantastically well trained dog, but she used to get all barky and chasey at big vehicles.
If you had hearing like a dog, you'd understand why these monsters of the road have to be chased away. Walking on lead along busy roads can help them to realise that the noises go away unchaed, but be careful in roadside parks etc.
The noise of a lorry to a dog is like many many dog whistles accoding to one learned friend, so he is within his rights to want to chase it off!

I've seen dogs that runs after lorries barking, here in Hong Kong a lot. At one point, I had a stray mongrel running right beside my car barking like crazy and I had to slow down 'coz I was afraid that it might run in front of my car and no way will I be able to sleep at night knowing I've killed an animal.
I did recognized the young dog that was after my car as one of the pals of a stray that was ran over by some other car some time ago (did not witness that accident but saw the poor dead dog on the side of the road).
I somehow believe that they seem to know exactly what had happened to their pal(s) and probably witnessed something in the past that cars, bikes, lorries, etc are not their friends, if you know what I mean.
Not a lot of people in Hong Kong would stop or slow down for animals on the road. Too many strays and the government is not doing a lot to help.
Lots of dog rescue or cat society rescues in HK are having problems with the government who will not help out. Did you know that they even dropped the "R" in RSPCA in HK?
Anyway, before I keep going...keep your dog on a leash while walking him on busy roads and train him.
