From ppl's personal experience, which brand would you recommend for good quality, long lasting laptop? I am looking at Acer but have heard bad things.
Dell? Compaq? Toshiba? Any info gratefully received.

Love it. Absolutely no problems whatsoever.
Is there any specific thing you want your laptop for? Gaming, weight, size? How important is the budget?
You should first of all decide the spec you want, including size, weight and battery life as well as the internal workings, and then try and narrow it down to three that meet your requirements.
And then get opinions on the three.

Acer or Toshiba NOT DELL.Did you see lately that DELL are recalling a load of laptop batteries because they can catch on fire!!!
I would have said IBM, but we have IBM T40 \ T42 at work and there are a few (@3% of the laptops) problems, basically the motherboard, this is due to the fact that the front of the laptop is very thin and people pick up there laptop by the front, this puts a lot of pressure on the front of the laptop and cause it to put streess on the mother board, so take this into consideration with other makes. Yes they look nice being slim, but do you really want it to go wrong?
