I saw Mara Yamauchi on TV last night.....she is also sponsored by a running shoe company, not Nike. I did wonder if she would have been so unhappy if her sponsors had developed the Superfly shoes and if it had been her using them. I think that the decision strikes a fair balance. Those athletes who want the superfly type shoes will be able to purchase them, but sponsors won't be able to give their athletes shoes which aren't available to everybody. I think that the decision should have been laid out in terms of principle rather than specifics though otherwise when the next thing comes along which isn't superfly type then it will all be to do again.

I think one has to be careful. Having gone down the route of banning artificial aids to performance this should include all beneficial to performance drugs and equipment/gear.

Bodyskins, the skin-hugging swimsuits were banned in 2010. Belly putters and some lofted wedges have been banned in golf.
Sporting authorities keep a close eye on sports equipment to make sure competitors don't get an unfair advantage.
