I have had very short hair for a few years but have decided that I would like to grow it a bit longer so that I can wear it up, now and again.

I haven't had it cut for four months and it's ok but there are so many layers in, it will take a couple of months to become manageable.

Any tips for getting through this? I don't want to give in and go and have it all taken off again.

Wear a hat Tilly ;-))
I think you just have to find what works for you, it's not always easy I know.

Some tips here.

Seriously I think it's just a question of patience. If you can trust your hairdresser just have the ends taken off every now and then to keep some sort of shape. Good luck

That's just the sort of thing I was looking for, Mamya. Thank you for that.

It looks as though I need to book an appointment with my friend Mike.

Margo, you are wrong and right. I can't wear a hat in the house! However as you say, patience is what is needed... and a couldn't care less what my hair looks like attitude. :-)
I shouldnt say this but, keep away from hairdressers as they will snip to earn their crust.

DIY as much as possible as hair grows @ 6inches pa or 1.25cms pm. Eat lots of fish to increase growth & healthy hair

A timely warning, Tambo. Thank you for that. I'll give it another couple of months. As Margo says, I can always wear a hat when I go out. Actually, I tend to wear a bandana around my head and ears, as I easily get faceache when going out in the cold.

Keep a bit of layering around your face while you grow out the rest
Last year I was wondering about growing mine and had started, my hairdresser was cutting the longer bits out and the layers were gradually catching-up...…………… then she disappeared last March and no-one would tell me where she'd gone. I finally found her a couple of weeks ago, by which time my hair was pretty long, when she tidied it all up to a neat shoulder-length.

I got through by starting to buy fancy clips, scrunchies and hairbands to control the hair. It worked! Have a go, some are very pretty. I'm not much good at putting it up - but getting better. Stick with it. :)
Oh! If only I had your problem Tilly!
I grew mine out a few years ago because I was having problems getting to the hairdresser. Basically I just ignored it. I have got a fringe which I am used to trimming myself so I just let the rest do its own thing. I did try growing the fringe out but I didn't like it enough to pursue. Its now pretty much waist length but quite scratty. The only thing I did find is that I needed a gentler shampoo and a richer conditioner as the length gets much drier than my short hair did.
I'm trying to do the same Tilly - I've had short back and sides for years and so my layers are growing sorta well - however I have been told my hair is awful looking but I'm determined to not give in but it will be hard. Definitely wouldn't be long enough for scrunchies or whatever.

I'm also enjoying the thickness of my hair - at the mo feel like Julie Andrews playing Maria.
my hair grows faster than that, so it may not take quite so long; we're all different.
