It seems that Cummings's influence is not as great as we think:

He wanted to can HS2 - that seem likely to get the green light
He wanted to move the PM's office into an "all-screens and ticker-tape" "nerve-centre" at No 12, which got canned when the PM got wind of it.
And it looks likely that the government review of civil service departments which Cummings was mad keen for is going to be sensible rather than destructive.

As for Lee Cain (if ever a face fitted a name),, the problem with picking a fight with the press is, they tend to fight back.
And it's all very well now boycotting BBC, Sky etc, but a constant stream of "we asked for a spokesperson for the government to appear but no one was available") starts to look like running away pretty soon. There will come a time when the government will deem it to its advantage to put its case for something directly, and then I think you'll see these unelected thugs put in their place.

Just about every PM has unelected advisors and they are often lambasted by anyone who doesn’t like the influence they have.

I'm not keen on these advisers but it seems all parties use them so I guess we are stuck with them.

Ultimately it does come down to the Party/PM. If the advisers are coming up with things the electorate will not tolerate, or at least their voters, then it is unlikely they (Party/PM) will listen to the advice.
