He says in his statement that the fact that he is gay "has been consuming me for the last few years", yet he's been married for 27 years - are we to deduce he didn't know he was gay until a few years ago, or that if he was it didn't trouble him til a few years ago? He also says: "This is something that has caused many heart-breaking conversations at home" - if those were recent conversations, why did he not open up to his wife at least long before? How awful for her and their daughters. I can find little sympathy for the guy if he knew all along and never told his Mrs, though he appears to be full of self-pity. Must admit I never warmed to him, and like him even less now. Where do your sympathies lie?

The thing that bothers me out PS is that I went to see him in a show and he put absolutely no effort into his role. I should have asked for my money back.
His ‘outing’ was more dramatic than his Dr Dolittle.

The three main things I wonder about this are:

Did he know he was gay when he got married 27 years ago?

When did he inform his wife about his sexuality?

Has he ever had any homosexual contact during his marriage?

And before anyone says it's none of my/our business, I'm afraid he's made it our business by using his privileged access to national television to tell us about it. I can only think he jumped before he was pushed - same as Gareth Thomas did, someone else who has been described as 'brave', although he had been cruising the seedier
fleshpots of Soho for anonymous gay sex, while still married and unbeknown to his wife. Not very 'brave' in my opinion.

I don't really care if Schofield (or anyone else) is gay, but I've found a lot of coverage of his coming out verging on the nauseating.

I think the references to Mr Schofield being 'brave' and ' a hero' speak more to the lazy misuse of the word and adjective by our modern culture - as advised, he is actually neither.
