I asked the very heavily accented young man where abouts in India he lived and he very abruptly told me he was born in Newcastle and lived there all his life. By the end of the conversation I was in no doubt that he was being truthful.
Way way back in 1989 I visited a Call Centre in Weybridge to watch a demonstration of a software system my Company were considering adopting. The system took incoming calls and then displayed the appropriate response for the operator to enounce. While watching it I observed one which said,"Good Morning, [Company] Cardiff Call Centre, Rebecca speaking, how can I help you" which the lass obediently trotted out. The system identified the region (from the number dialled, all sites having local numbers) and used that [Company] site in the response message although all calls came through to Weybridge. The demonstrator claimed people were more friendly if they thought they were dealing with locals. It didn't go as far as regional accents though, which could have been fun.
