What does he like? Bit hard to suggest gifts but here are some ideas....inscribed tankard, garden centre gift token, Case of port or some other alcoholic beverage, book or music token, jewellery, cuff link, expensive stationary eg journal ready to write his auto biography in, barbeque tools, John Lewis do some really good man gifts at various price, a really good cookery book...eg curries and a spice tray ....
Whatever you get him, don't give him something that he has to put on the sideboard and look at every day. Get him something that can be put away somewhere, and used occasionally. goodgoalie's suggestion is a good one.
If he likes films maybe you can buy him a membership or vouchers to an Odeon cinema, he can use them at his leisure.

I might have mentioned it before but Morrisons and Tesco (our local ones at least) have Tamnavulin on at £22 this week instead of £35 leaving enough for a matching pair of glasses, maybe with a greeting etched on.
Tickets to an event? Depending on what he likes, maybe horse racing, Ascot is comng up; or the theatre; a Festival or a concert; an exhibition - Van Gogh at The Tate or Tuthankhamum at Satchi Museum for example.
