how does a subpoena work?

My mother in law has been told she is being subpoenaed in a civil case regarding a medical issue. She doesn't want to be involved in the case at all for several resons- can she be forced by the subpoena?

Sunpoena means "under penalty" which means you can be punished if you ignore it. I suggest she consults Citizens' Advice or a solicitor
