Maybe that's because smokers tend to die earlier for non Covid reasons and therefore are underrepresented in the vulnerable category of over 70s.
I think smokers would be more likely to suffer from breathing difficulties and heart problems and therefore be more vulnerable to Covid, but I know it's a complicated topic.
I do think it's probably too late to stop smoking now though in terms of the current outbreak

No I know patsy, can't find it but know I've seen it mentioned a couple of times in the last few weeks. Of course smoking is bad for you and smoking related lung damage will increase your risk if you've got it. However one would need to be a smoker to understand how hard it is to give up - despite all you nonsmokers constantly telling us how bad and disgusting it is.
It's not killing young fit kids... It has killed young fit kids. The amount of people who have / had had covid there's no surprise SOME young and fit have died. It's not something to panic over.

I am an ex-smoker. I smoked heavily from my mid teens up to my first major operation about 15 years ago. I am now nearly 70yrs. Every pre op assessment I have had for 'lung and respiratory function' has revealed, according to the clinicians, that my lungs are in good order and worthy of a person much younger than my years.
That is at odds with the GP Practise nurse who said I had early stages of COPD at the 'Quit smoking' clinic.
I know, now, that should I suffer breathing difficulties due to Covid I am a goner.I know my lungs would not cope and it's all due to heavy smoking and may be working in traffic fumes. I have coughed up phlegm every day for several years and I am realistic to accept it was self inflicted and down to smoking. I am not being judgemental. My MIL kept her head in the sand about the dangers and she died as a result of smoking against medical advice. There are no prizes for guessing why I also suffer from cardio vascular disease. :-)x
