Please can you settle a little dispute between me and her indoors. Two versions of a popular family film, but which one is the better one? Is it the 1994 re-make starring Richard Attenborough, or the 1947 original black and white version starring Maureen O'Hara?

Not a great deal to choose between the two. The remake may be (to some people's tastes) a little more schmaltzy but not to mine. The original has a little more of the Christmassy feel to it and to my way of thinking a rather more satisfactory ending - hope that helps.
Whatever the film I always think the original is better. remakes often update a story & it`s not the same. The original film you mention kept the belief a lot better.
The original is definitely better, but that doesn;t mean the remake wasn't a good film, they both have their own merits.
I don't think one is "better" than the other - it's down to personal taste. I prefer the 1994 version myself.
i prefer the remake. it fits more with our times!
Definetly the re-make version. Unless you're still living in the days of World War II. !!
1947 is the best version in neely 60 years it does,t seem to have aged atall
