No but they may not see the message as it sometimes goes into a different file if you have no 'connection' through FB

No, unless they have opted out of message option (it won't show on their page)
But they have to agree to accept your message before opening it.

Thanks everyone, I didn't know any of that.I sent a message to someone I knew from years ago but didn't get a reply, but it did say,
You and ?????? are not connected on Facebook, so I was wondering if perhaps they either didn't see the message or perhaps they don't want to get in touch or perhaps I'd need to send a friends request first.

I quite often miss messages that are not from friends because I don't look in my "others" box

If you send a Friend's request then you'll know if they want to hear from you

It doesn't say that Bobbi ,it just we are not connected, whatever that means.

elliemay, i did think of doing that but thought this person might not remember me so I wanted to explain in a message who i am.
It could be someone who doesn't go on there very often so I'll wait a while then try again.

What FB means by 'you are not connected' means you are not their friends on FB. Simply send a friends request and then its up to the person if they accept that. If they do then you can message them privately or put a message on their page.
