where can i find a simple converter

where can i find a simple converter,that can calculate things like changing feet into square feet if the floorboards i want to but measure 4inches wide do i time this by 9 to give me 36 then just add 12 inches so like if like the board length is 3ft high by 9 boards across would i have 3 square feet? help this is driving me mad

You are mixing measurements and definitions so no wonder you find it confusing. To simplify things take one overall measurement first e.g LENGTH
1. If a room is 12 feet long and a floorboard is 3 feet in length then you would need 4 boards to cover the length of the room(12 divided by 3 = 4).
2. Next WIDTH. If the room is 9 feet wide then for every foot width you would need 3 boards(4inches =1/3foot) thus for 9 feet you would need 9x3 boards(27).
3. The total therefore would be 27(across) x 4 long = 108 boards.
However in simple terms your total square footage is simply 12 x 9 which also equals 108 (sq.ft)(coincidence)
However, most DIY shops have have ready printed leaflets on calculating this sort of thing.
Hope this helps but if you give me a basic overall LENGTH by overall WIDTH I can do it for you.

In addition to above could I correct in thinking that you are referring to LAMINATE FLOORING and not floorboards.
If that is the case, as before:
1. measure the overall maximum LENGTH you want to cover by the overall WIDTH you want to cover(BUT BETTER IN METRES). Therefore 4metres(loose approximation to 12 feet) x 3 metres(loose approximation to 9 feet) = 12 sqm.
2. Now a laminate pack of boards is enough to cover 1.91 sqms. Therefore if you divide 12 by 1.91 you will come up with 6.28 packs.(I have used the B&Q website(www.diy.com) as a reference for this)
