Insomnia And Milk

I suffer from insomnia but the past two nights - I went downstairs at about 4.00am and made some hot milk.

Turned off the light and slept to about 7.30. Can anybody tell me what the hot milk really does.

If you google ‘sleep hygiene’ you’ll find lots of information about how to improve your sleeping habits.
JJ, sometimes my wife has trouble getting to sleep, so she takes one Dramamine pill and it seems to do the job. You can buy them over the counter.
Vagus I've been on zopiclone for over three years. I don't take it every night only when I feel I need it. I'm only on the half dose now but started on the full.

vagus - am a bit late in the day to look for sleep hygiene now, if I don't have it now, I'll never have it.

have done all the right things,

coal black room,
coal black eye mask
cool bedclothes
no tech,
no flashing lights

I have tried the whole heap
Sleep hygiene won't help me as I have no trouble getting to sleep -its if pain wakes me in the night I can't get back to sleep and the zopiclone gives me a deeper sleep so the pain does not usually wake me.

APG - you've a good doctor, I have friends whose doctors would give them rat poison if it would shut them up, anything they want.
I have a good doctor - he realises a good nights sleep is the basis for good health. He doesn't have to 'shut me up' as I'm on repeat prescription.
APG, I have seven of the little pills in my bedside drawer, left over from a time a number of years ago when I needed them. They seem to do as much good there, knowing I can take one if I go through a really bad sleeping phase, as they do when I take one. All psychological really. I was prescribed them for two weeks, and then very reluctantly by my GP a further two weeks, after a lecture :/
Jj, it’s never too late to relearn something if you really want to...that’s the key, really wanting to!
Vagus, don't patronise me please. Your sleep problems may be psychological - I can assure you mine are physical and no amount of positive thinking will make a bit of difference.
I wasn’t patronising you at all APG, you’ve misunderstood. I was referring to them being psychological for myself, knowing they’re there if I need them.
JJ, if warm milk helps you then stick to that.

Medication is essential for some but best avoided if you can.

Maybe you're not doing enough in the day to make you tired enough. I always sleep better if I've had a particularly busy day.
Do you eat lettuce, JJ?

There is a chemical in lettuce that is known to induce sleep.

Cherries, walnuts, banana, milk, almonds, honey, cheese, hummus, and Jasmine rice. And lettuce.

I agree jj is very rude sometimes -and I mean that I'm not stirring.
vagus, perhaps you can give me some advice on what I could eat before I go to bed to prevent me waking up at 3 am with joint pain so bad its like someone is sticking hot knives into my feet, knees and wrists? a nice hummus dip with a bit of lettuce and a banana on the side?
Nope, no advice at all. Do whatever works for you, as I do for me.
Those foods I mentioned are all supposed to aid sleep, never tried them myself.
I find that plain tonic water helps as I suffer from restless legs .
