Artillery History

During my family history research, I discovered my gt grandfather was on St Helena Island in 1886. He married a local girl, and they moved back to Poole, Dorset between 1887 and 1889.
Why was he serving on St Helena Island at that time? (1886) He was a gunner in the Artillery.
