Java Compatible Browser??

Hi I am trying to join an internet Chat Room. It said I need a Java compatible browser like MS . I am on MS Explorer however, when I tried to log on to it the following message comes up----

"DigiChat is loading - please wait..."
Then-
"We're sorry, but our chat application requires a Java compatible browser in order to run."
Does anyome know how I can run this programme- perhpas there is something I can alter in my settings?
