If you leave the TV switched off via the remote, does it reduce the life of the tv? Is it a bad thing to do?

On another note, however, I have heard from power companies that leaving the TV on standby can use just as much power as if it were switched on.

I did see that they were going to stop doing the 'Stand By' funtion on equipment as it waists so much power, I find that a bit hard to beleive, in the old days of Valves, it used to keep the heather chain of the values power up, so that it wouldn't take so long to warm up, not Sure what it does in LCD \ Plasma TV's.
Certainly turn it off before you go to bed.

Yes, it does reduce the working life of the TV set ! This has happened to me twice ! When you power-off via the remote most of the TV's circuits are powered down, so does use much less electricity, but the internal power supply stays up-and-running. It has to - in order to keep the remote circuits alive for when you next switch it on again via the remote. Some of the components in a modern power supply are just as electically stressed when little current is being drawn as when a lot is, and you can find that the power supply in a TV often kept on standby will be the first thing to fail. Parts for the power supply in many modern TVs are often difficult to get - even when it is only two years old - as some are specially made for a narrow range of models. Switch off with the on-off switch on the box and it nearly all powers down. There will just be a trickle of current to keep the tuner memory 'alive' and tuned in to the right stations. Same applies to a video recorder.
