Before getting rid of IE I saved all my favourites, which are sorted in folders and subfolders. Now I want to import them into Mozilla. I can't find a way of importing them as they are; Mozilla seems to want to import only file by file. Any tips?

Do not get rid of IE. Seriously.

I have been use FF for a long time and am very comfortable with it. But even so, I need IE on rare occasions.

Also, you will not good your Windows updates if you do not have IE.

As far as I am aware you can only import the bookmarks (favourites) wholesale from IE or file by file

But when I browse under file by file I have the option to import whole folders. Are you browsing in the right place?

Hi Ethel, thanks for your answer. Where do you see the option to import whole folders? I can't find that anywhere. And I'm certain I'm browsing in the right place. Maybe the easiest thing to do would be re-install IE.
When I click 'browse' in the import bookmarks it brings up everything in 'my documents' including folders and so on.

You should certainly re-install IE though.

Then you can download the IE Tab extension in FF to quickly open a page in IE format within FF.

Please don't say that you uninstalled IE before you installed Mozilla ? When you install either Mozilla Firefox or the Opera browser, they ask you if you want to import your favourites/bookmarks from IE automatically. Dead easy, no problems, works for me every time !
