Flat - Maisonette

Could somebody please tell me the differenc between a maisonette and a flat?

The main distinction is that a maisonette is not necessarily all on one floor.

AS usual, QM is there before us all. A flat only has one floor, A maisonette has two or more floors. My mum lives in a block of maisonettes, she has a neighbour above her as well as on both sides and all have stairs

I always thought that one of the other distinctions is that a maisonette has it's own external entrance

Maisonette:

A property comprising of more than one separate living areas; used to describe a flat which extends over more than one floor or a flat that has its own entrance at street level.

Flats don't exlusively have 1 floor. I live in a splite level flat. I too thought the main distinction was the own/ shared main entrance criteria
