You can ask them individually when they ring to remove you from their list, or you can try the telephone preference service - it is a voluntary code that reputable companies adhere to, and they will not call you if you are on the list. To stop yourself getting back on to the lists, you must stop giving out your number on raffle tickets, claiming prizes, bingo scratch-cards etc. etc. They're not usually "cold" calling you, because once upon a time, someone somewhere wrote your telephone number as a contact number (a newspaper or magazine competition for example.) and didn't tick a minuscule "Never Contact Me, Ever, You Bastards" box. Your number then got sold for vast quantities of pies to a calling-centre database list, which then sold the numbers onto individual firms.

I heartily recommend tps as kags and IndieSinger describe. Since I contacted them I have only had about 4 calls and 2 of them were within a week or so of starting. The other two totally panicked when I told them I was listed on tps. The Marketing Manager for one of them rang me back almost immediately to apologise.

Just one comment kags. tps don't "remove" you from a list. They maintain a list against which all "reputable" cold call companies should check their lists, and any which are on the tps one must not be called. But I agree in principle - keep your number a secret!
