Remember watching a docu quite some years ago about what can get contaminated when flushing the loo. Particularly in the small loos which we in terraced houses have. Anything and everything that you have in, on or above the sink is at risk. I've always put the seat down before flushing since I watched that.

It is not more likely that the rat was already in the house and simply fell into the bowl?

Toilet outlet pipes are an average of four inches wide, with a ninety-degree bend in them - it would take something pretty tempting to convince a rat to climb up one into a dwelling. I suggest that, in common with spiders, the rat simply got lost exploring the house, rather than being tempted up a sewage pipe.

A drainpipe is fresh, usually has running water through it, and it's straight.

Doesn't really compare with a foul waste pipe with a ninety-degree bend in it - does it?

I didn't claim to have an 'expert opinion', I merely pointed out what I believed to be logical.

There is no such thing in plumbing as a 90 degree bend. The two pipes joined together might eventually be at right angles to each other; however, there is an elbow connecting the two, but there is no 90 degree angle at the junction.
