Aye, back in the day there were no wedding present lists, you were just grateful for any gift received. I got towels, bedding, blankets, tea sets, cutlery etc. It was great starting out with all the basics.

One lovely lady made me a peg-bag and filled it with pegs for my very useful wedding-present.
we had 3 sets of stainless steel teapot milk jug sugar bowl and toast rack ,the teapots leaked lol but we didn't do lists
I never buy from wedding lists. I get things that aren't household items and i think the couple will like. But unless it's close family, we make excuses not to go because both of us hate weddings.

Much more appreciated then Maggie
That's what bridal showers are( or were ) for in the States. All the basics to start out with, then things like dinnerware, "silverware"...who has that?...decorative things, as wedding gifts. I still have the cutlery my parents received in 1932.
We got nowt. But, I got a lovely wife.
Most couples now days have been living together for some time, and many have kids. They already have set up home! Times have changed.

We specifically said " we'd rather have your presence than your presents".
