how would you define "we", Zacs? i'm pretty sure my ancestors never owned or traded slaves; indeed they were probably bound in serfdom to the lord of the manor and traded in the same way that slaves were. much of the general population will be the same.

Western Europe, and the UK in particular, is a great place for BAME people to live.
The vast vast majority of people are not racist, and frankly it sickens me that some people paint the UK as a racist nation - there is a tiny minority of mouth-breathers who are racist (as there are in every country on the face of the planet), but to suggest the UK is a racist place is unfair and wrong.

Racism doesn’t have to come from people, DD. It can be inherent in the fabric of our buildings. I didn’t know until the other day that the actor David Harewood’s name stems from plantation owners giving his ancestors the name of the estate’s back in Britain. Harewood house was built on the back of money his ancestors made for the plantation owners.

The article I cited above tells us that not only did the founder of The Guardian have links to the slave trade through his cotton business, but the the paper supported the Confederate side in the American Civil War, and said in 1862 of Lincoln: "it was an evil day both for America and the world when he [Lincoln] was chosen President of the United States".
I look forward to seeing how they respond.
