Watching Neighbours yesterday and the story was about a pride festival they were putting on. One of the characters said oh the queer community will love this and again the word was mentioned by one of the other characters and not with any malice. It took be aback really as I don't think I've heard that on our screens for a long time.

Kisses on the bottom Douglas? What are you? 8? (that's a line from Friends by the way).
Douglas, with your answer at 12:14 Wed you have excelled yourself. Superb observation.
Barsel, as far as soaps go, it's a matter of what they want a character to do and what storyline they want to set up. If one went up to another and asked if he was queer, it could be in all sorts of context: the first guy is gay and he's looking for a mate, the second guy is straight and is angry and punches the first guy, the second guy is straight but not offended, the second guy is straight but is surprised to find himself fancying the first guy, the second guy is gay and delighted, the second guy is gay but still in the closet so is nervous ... In soaps anything is possible. So it is in real life, but you'd need to abide by public standards of courtesy rather than soap ones.
just to add to my last answers about what viewers might think of it, well, it would depend on the viewer. Some will take offence easily, some might still be outraged that gays are allowed on TV at all, some will think it's normal life, some will think it depends on whether the first guy is presented as a good guy or a gay-basher and so on.

Sorry, once again I am going to say I am leaving this now. I ask a question ( of sorts ) as easily set out as I can and yet nobody seems to understand what I am saying. In fact I think I will 'Go on a break' yes Prudie, that's also from friends.
Ah Prudie, you're obviously very young and never experienced the Saturday afternoon rock show with the much missed Mr Freeman. :-) X
