Hi, would have to agree about Dylan as my little girls swimming instructer says there is one in every one of her classes ! My friends little boy is called Riley, i think that is still quite unusual. Really dont like Saige or Flute...sorry ! My other friends little girl is called Phoebe and i dont think that is well used. I dont think there are any unique names for children unless you do have something totally out there !

Well in THIS town Tegan is rife! I am a primary teacher and almost every class has one (or is the sibling of one) sorry.
I have met a Porche-Carrera - no joke. And an Ocean-Skye.

Riley, Dylan, Phoebe and Tegan are really common where I live.

I recently met a girl called Azaya (pronounced exactly as it's spelt) and I thought that was a really beautiful name.

Another nice name for a girl is Tia.

By the way, useless information, but Sylvester Stallone has a son called Sage.

my eldest daughter, who is 14, is called Madison. when we named her i had never heard of it as a name before, but now it has become quite popular.
my other daughter is called Nadine, which even though it was a name i'd already heard of, i haven't heard of any other children with it!

The little girl i am having will have a normal ish name but the shortened version is more unusual.

my friend has just had a baby and called him Riley, and i know 3 dylans and they are all around the same age!

I work with two Nadines. As someone with a slightly unusual name (only two of us at middle school, so they put us in the same class, and we spell our names differently), I say give the kid a name that people can spell. Always hated having to spell my name out for a teacher every time I met a new one.
Personally I like the name 'Hannah'

Flute is a term we use for a womens lower erm.. you get the drift, so I wouldn't even dream of it!! Saige is awful - sounds like a herb!!

My Neice is called Autumn, after the song from War of the Worlds, Forever Autumn.

I have two sons, but if I had a girl, she would be called Darcy, without a doubt, because I love and adore that name!!

I know what you mean about having a unique name but it's hard to get the balance right btwenn unique and just plain daft!

As mentioned, Dylan and Riley are quite common names, Flute, I've not come across a girl named Flute and to be honest, I'm not too keen on it either, but then who am I to judge?
The names we have chosen for our little one aren't exactly unique but they're not that common in this area either and work well with our surname.

I've been in primary education for 9 years and have come across some really strange names, You should go with whatever you feel is right, as long as both you and your partner like the sound of it then go for it.

They are all quite common names round here now too as are Freya and Tegan. Trouble with trendy names is they quickly become dated. I prefer the traditional classic names like James, Edward, Catherine, Elizabeth etc as they are timeless. Remember Gladys, Mavis, Ethel, Cyril, Cedrick and Cuthbert were all trendy once but now associated with pensioners!! Your James and Catherine could be 1, 11,21,31, 41........ or 101!!

I like unusual names too so I went for American names as they're not that common over here. I've got two boys Bailey and Jesse and I haven't met many of either, although Bailey is getting more popular now.
I think character names like Gem and Scout are nice or perhaps musicians you like? Jesse's middle name is Cohen (after Leonard) and we love it.
It's such a personal thing though so go with your instincts and try not to worry about what others think x

I also love unusual names (which is just as well as I have never found anyone else with my name in my whole 30 years) but shudder at some of the weird and wonderful things some people call their children.

My name is Cornish (I was born in Cornwall and still live here). I know a lot of the local town names here which are also typically Cornish would make good unusual names for children. For instance, I love the name Lerryn for a girl and, although it would be unusual and unique, it would not be so out of place here as to cause bullying or other worries for a child in school, etc.

My name isn't a Cornish town but after all these years I did find a house and a boat with the same name. The owner's daughter is called holly and the second half of my name is holly in Cornish.

Maybe you could find some local inspiration? Just a thought.......
