My online website (for a holiday cottage) won't generate a huge number of customers, so I'm thinking of asking for payment by:-

personal cheque,or
bank transfer,or
paypal ( by upgrading my existing personal account, then paying a 4% transaction fee)

Am I right in thinking that the ability to accept credit/debit card payments ( either by phone or online) would require an expensive arrangement with my bank?
Advice would be gratefully received!

Paypal will let your visitors pay by credit/debit card. No need to mess about with your bank,
I would stick to paypal if I were you. I think you will find that you would have to pay for the service of the bank plus a percentage of every transaction.
