Private Diagnosis Bypassing Gp
34 Answers
Is it possible to get a diagnosis for a suspected medical condition without getting referred by the GP?
I understand this could cost a lot of money but would prefer to take this route. Of course if the condition is confirmed I would expect the GP to be informed.
I can't find a way to do it.

try and see
and tell us what occurred - dont ask the doctor if he is good - ask his staff.
do doctors recommend other doctors ? well Dr X of alphaville ( he is still alive ) did not take private patients and refused to recommend ANY colleague who did !! ( eek!) presumably on the grounds that if they got it wrong the patient wd claim from Dr X ....
personal experience - I was stunned

Peter, maybe something similar to what you wrote here is the cause of the problem.

barry1010, excuse me if I am teaching my grandparent, but you might want to start by looking for a consultant who deals with the area in which you think your diagnosis lies rather than zeroing in to the specific condition.....so maybe eg an endocrinologist, rheumatologist, orthopod and so on instead of looking for eg a spine man or a Sjorgrens syndrome man?
This question may also be complicated, if the diagnosis you are thinking of does not have a particular test. Sometimes you cannot prove someone has a particular illness - you just make an educated guess (which may or may not be right) from the symptoms that the person is showing. This could be true for several mental health conditions, CFS/ME and so on.
In those situations, it might not be all that useful to have a diagnosis per se, rather just treat the symptoms as they occur
