Baby quitens through certain sounds

My four month old daughter always falls silent when either the hoover,electric shaver or car engine is on when previously she will have been crying.What causes this reaction?

These are known as 'white noise' and are things that she will remember from being in the womb. Anything that reminds a baby of being in the womb will have a soothing effect.

Don't know what causes it, but putting the hoover on always worked for me and I have recommended it to a lot of new mums!
