Is there a scam doing the rounds re TV licences? I have just had an email telling me that my licence expires tomorrow and asking me to set up a new direct debit. It also says that they couldn't take my last payment (they did). It also quotes my licence number, although I have no way of checking that. It looks genuine but I have grave doubts.

Sounds like a definite scam to me
Yes Jack, there's a lot about - I know when mine expires and their ref number never matches mine so I bin them.

If in doubt phone them but not from a number in an email.
The licence number should be on your bank statement, according to their website.

Thank you, ellie, for the link. Most informative.
Bellow is an extract of this week's newsletter from my city councilor.

// SCAM ALERT
Below is a scam email received by a local resident. As usual please pass on any suspected scams to WWW.ACTIONFRAUD.POLICE.UK. OR COUNCIL TRADING STANDARDS.

"Direct Debit Alert

Tomorrow is your last chance to remain licensed.

You won't be covered if you let your licence expire.

As we couldn't take the latest payment from your bank account, this amount will also need to be paid when you set up your new Direct Debit.

Your TV Licence details:

Licence number:

3721638803

Licence expiry date:

15 Aug 2020

You can view, download or print your licence on our website. Please keep a record of your licence number, as you'll need this whenever you log in." ///

Identical to the one I received.
Definitely a scam. Delete.
I doubt the TV licensing people have ever asked you for your email address so doubt very much they know it.
