In mediaeval times, dragons in Europe were often a symbol of evil, taken from the Bible. Paintings would show St George and other heroes dressed in knights' armour fighting the fearsome beast, often rescuing a lady in white, who would represent goodness and purity. But not all dragons were depicted as evil. The red Welsh dragon, for example, is a symbol of protection and nationhood. And to this day the Chinese Dragon represents the link between Heaven and Earth.
Lies! All Lies! Dragons did indeed exist, breathing fire and pilfering maidens. They were a kind of dark ages dinosaur, probably evolvin from large turkey-life beast (simply taking the bird's scaly nastiness to it's logical conclusion). Unfortunately their bellies were full of hydrochloric acid so when they died their bones dissolved. So no skeletons. Clever stuff, really.
