what suprrises me is that there are so many outbreaks in closed communities - cut off villages, ships at sea - monasteries prisons etc

Mengele did not conduct is experiments in order to discover anything - that was a nominal sop to higher powers to give an illusion of respectability to anyone who cared - which was no-one.
The truth is, camp internees were regarded as sub-human with no worth or value to the Third Reich, and if some psycho headcase wanted to amuse himself with torture under the guise of medical exploration - who honestly cared less?
