Because smartphones can be used to pay for things (via Apple Pay, Android Pay, etc) they support 'NFC'. So, whenever your phone detects another NFC device (such as your contactless debit card) just a short distance away, it attempts to open an app to communicate with it. As you haven't got such an app on your phone, it generates the error message that you're seeing.
Suggested solution number 1: Keep your phone away from your bank cards (and anything else that might use NFC, such as the card readers at supermarket checkouts).
