Had a discussion at work yesterday about the film, Shawshank Redemption. And I asked the question, When Tim Robbins breaks out he goes through a hole in the wall covered by a poster. But how does the poster manage to seal itself back tothe wall if he's on the other side? Nobody could come up with the answer, Or is it one of those Movie Bloopers?

Wasn't the top 2 corners still attached to the wall and the bottom 2 not? All he would need to do was lift the poster from the bottom and crawl under it still leaving the top bits attached.

I've watched it a few times but it's been a while since the last viewing.
Same here Tiger (Not seen for a while many viewings), but that to me is the most logical answer... but Andy was a bit dim so he wouldn't have thought about that would he.
Yes, very dim! lol

;-)
More to the point, how fortuitous that it was thundering and lightening when Andy escaped and he was able to wait for a clash of thunder when he needed to bash the sewer pipe with the rock he had!!
More interestingly is the fact that no-one seems to notice that Rita Hayworth has been exchanged for Raquel Welch.

The original novella is entitled Rita Hayworth - The Shawshank Redemption - probably because the inference is that the novella is set at an earlier time than the movie.

These changes and questions like the poster sticking are all part of what makes films what they are - we have to suspend our disbelief, as with the thunder coincidence, and just go with the atmosphere of the film.

Otherwise we'd be sitting there wondering how Red (who is called Red because he is of Irish extraction, and has red hair) is being played by Morgan Freeman.

I can gloss over those sorts of things, no problem.

When it comes to Sean Connery playing an Irish cop in The Untouchables with a Scots accent, and then getting an Oscar for it (????? !!!!!) I do draw the line, but Shawshank is a fine film, and the intricacies of basic physics do nothing to detract from its appeal.
The posters changing is given reference in the film I'm sure and is used to denote the passage of time. I'm almost certain there was one up between Rita and Raquel, I wouldn't swear but feel it was Marilyn Monroe.
Prudie - that may be true, it's years since I've watched it - if so, it would be a clever indication of the passage of time.
The posters do change to imply the passing of time. He was incarcerated for years!
While we're at it Morgan Freeman was called Red because his surname was Redding
Ah now I didn't know that.

Loved the film ending when Andy looked up from his boat work and saw Red walking along the beach towards him. Pure class.
"The pinup posters of Rita Hayworth, Marilyn Monroe, and Raquel Welch represent the outside world, hope, and every inmate's desire to escape to a normal life. Andy admits candidly to Red that sometimes he imagines stepping right through the photograph and into another type of life."
In Stephen King's novella, Andy spends 28 years in Shawshank before his escape.
Shawshank is one of my all time favourite movies, although I do sometimes watch the bloopers shows,(funny sometimes) I for one do just enjoy films of the story telling no nit picking unless there's a major plot loss.
Just as an aside - apologies if you have read this before -

Stephen King was shopping in his local supermarket when he was stopped by an old lady, and the exchange went like this -

"You're that Stephen King the writer aren't you?"

"I am indeed."

"You write all those horrible vampire stories, I don't like stories like that."

"I'm sorry to hear that."

"No, I much prefer uplifting stories like The Shawshank Redemption."

"I wrote that as well."

"No you didn't!"

whereupon the old lady marched off.

Fame is a curious thing!!

It's a blooper - there's no way to seal the poster from the other side. If it had been stuck only at the top it's highly likely they would have noticed before the warden threw the stone through it.
37tn - // It's a blooper //

One man's blooper is another man's poetic licence.
