Why does the tide come in when you are in England, but not abroad?

By abroad do you mean the mediterranean? If so there are tides in the med, but because it is a small sea they are very small tides so you wouldn't notice them the same.

You don't get much of a tide on islands in large bodies of water like the Pacific either.The main reason for high local tidel flows is topogrphy. The funeling of water into narrow channels or estuaries for example.
