It's small & convenient, as you can take it around anywhere within reach of your wifi. (I take mine to the bathroom.) It has very good play-back characteristics and I use its Bluetooth connection to play through my hifi if I'm in the sitting-room.
As I already have Amazon Prime, I'm able to listen to quite a lot of the Amazon library for free but, for 3.99 monthly, I have access to the entire Amazon Music library, which is vast. This is a special offer where I can only play back on a single Echo dot, but I don't have the need for multiple Echo devices.
I'm certainly not into controlling the lights and the heating through fancy & complicated mechanisms, even though I've had 55 years of computer experience. For the time being, I'll leave all that to the technofreaks who are prepared to pay high prices for the latest gizmos. (My daughter bought a house in Dubai that has this sort of thing. Her system has aged badly & who needs to dim the lights in another room from the kitchen?)

A lot of people speak very highly of Amazon's Echo Dot. In fact I know a lady who is 91years of age and has said that she wouldn't want to be without it.
However, I do not hold such views and I put it in the same category as Google Search Engine that will track your every move. Furthermore, it is Not advisable to use it in bedrooms and bathrooms.
Read what a real tech has to say on the matter. :-

@[email protected] I can only think that you are using the word 'toot' as the Australian for 'lavatory' and consider my posting as a load of down the pan material.
[email protected] real tech is somebody who is more knowledgeable than myself (and possibly yourself) on technical matters, such as computers etc.
Is there anybody now in Answerbank who is able to say that they are more technically qualified than the University Professor, Dr Fry who has said that " very senior people in the tech industry won't even take a smartphone into their bedroom". Also is there anyone who disputes what has been reported that........ Amazon admitted staff listen to customers conversations through Alexa, stating the recordings were used to help improve the Echo device’s understanding of human speech.
