Just before mowing the lawn today, I noticed a couple of clumps of 'eggs'. They were lilac coloured, about the size of a pin head and tightly packed onto about 6 blades of grass, each blade having about 70ish (at a guess) eggs on it. I call them eggs, as I assume they are an insect egg. Anyone any idea which insect?
I would hazard a guess at them being butterfly eggs, but I am not an expert on butterflies, there are too many different types so I would only be guessing
I've just been through my moth and butterfly books and the nearest to your description is the Small or Little Blue butterfly.
Sadly the moth book doesn't give the egg colours, but the butterfly I've given you lays tiny pale blue eggs on grass or Kidney Vetch. All other UK butterflies lay white, orange or green, so it may be a possible. What do you think?
