I cant see a difference really. Not enough to get het up about at least
I wonder why they changed it? Not het up, I didn’t watch it and never bother....but curious.
I didn't see it so I don't know if the subtitles matched what was sung.

However, in the original version, the words are "Britons never will be slaves" with the "never" strung out rather than "never, never, never".
Brilliant soloist, brilliant conductor - so enthusiastic! I could have done without the wonky version of Jerusalem - what was that all about? … and I’m sure they could have squeezed rather more singers into the choir, but all in all at this present time with all the troubles this country is dealing with, this evening had me in tears. Patriotism in the face of adversity. Who wouldn’t? Listening to that my instinct was sod BLM, sod Extinction Rebellion or whatever they’re called, and sod the ever-complaining ‘woke’. Tonight the silent majority has spoken …. and if the pedantic ‘someone’ arrives here to pontificate - whether it be in googled Greek, Latin, Chinese, Esperanto, or his usual Gobbledegook - that the silent majority don’t speak, I ‘shall’ (see what I did there?) refer him to that doyen of Britishness - Margot Leadbetter - champion of the backbone of Britain. ;o)
LOL ^^^^^
Well said, naomi, you'll get no argument from me :)
:o)
Lyrics do shift somewhat over time - this from 1763.

Just watched my recording of it. Fast forwarded through to bits I wanted. They were superb. Never fail to shed a tear.
Thanks for your reply Jourdain, what a pity I missed it, I could kick myself!

Still managed to make it patriotic, despite everything. Loved the flag lit up on top of the building and I sang along to Land of Hope and Glory, though not sure if you could call it 'singing'!
My grammar pedant’s pager buzzed me :-)

Strictly “shall” ought to be used because it expresses determination in the third person. Which presumably is the point.
“Will” expresses simple futurity and therefore finality. So you might say that the change of wording reflects greater confidence.

There’s the old joke about the drowning man who cries “I will drown and no one shall save me!” Sadly for him he is heard only by a grammarian :-)
Didn't catch the start but think I heard the main parts. Nice to hear good traditional, nationally uplifting music at the Proms.
That sounds like a suicidal plan, ich.
Really good show.

apparently jourdain, WILL be slaves were the original lyrics, only changed to SHALL by the ictorians (according to wiki anyway!)https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rule,_Britannia!#Original_lyrics
I linked to that fact last night Bednobs.

Things have a habit of changing.
Question Author
really? sorry although I can post links when I'm on my work laptop, I cant open them
It's fine :-)
Oh that patriotism is like a drug, a feel good factor, to appreciate what was bought for us at such cost.
Will? Shall? ''Never never never bend the knee!''
(Except to Her Maj!)
