Putting music onto MP3?

I bought a second hand MP3 player today (my 1st) as I have never bothered with them before, and don`t know how to transfer my own songs onto it. I have connected it to my USB and found the contents but I want my own stuff. Is there a free website, or can I download off CD, or download off Limewire (which I have), or buy a disc with 1000 songs on and choose off that?

Sorry if this is a simple question but any help would be appreciated. I know I should ask my 3 year old niece how to put songs onto my MP3 player because I don`t have a clue.

Thanks in advance

you can download from limewire or add cds to your pc then transfer to your mp3 player. my daughter use wmp to get songs on her mp3 player,
you can also make your own mp3 from CD's , use a programme like CDex , http://sourceforge.net/projects/cdexos/

I assume you haven't any mp3 tracks on the comp already. If this is the case you'll have to get yourself an mp3 ripper. There's plenty available, a lot of them free and it's used to transfer the music from a cd in the tray to a file you specify on the computer. If you have a choice rip at 128kb/s which is a good compromise between quality and memory. Once installed in the comp connect your mp3 player via the usb and in 'My Computer' you'll see you've an extra hard drive (that'll be your mp3 player). Double click it and copy and paste your choices into it.
By the way, if it's for 'music on the move' so to speak, you can easily reduce the bitrate (128kb/s) quite a bit as quality won't be noticed in such circumstances. By doing so you can get more on the player.
If you have realplayer installed on your computer and put a music CD in the CD drive, you can save the music as MP3 files to the transfer to your player.
