costs of implants vary widely, so shop around (very approx range £1500-2500 but could be even more or less). Bone grafts if your jawbone isn't up to it may be extra. But the procedure isn't particularly painful, maybe 3 or 4 injections to numb you while it's done, and a bit sore or swollen for a day or two (the dentist may give you antibiotics). Then as woofgang says, a few months to let it heal, then they screw a crown in (though I believe some cement them on). The implant is metal, the crown is whatever crowns are made of (there are different materials).
Clarion, yes, the guy at the chip shop is going to get all his done in Istanbul - half a dozen or so for less than £1000. But you do need more than one trip, usually one follow-up at the very least. Okay for him, he's Turkish, but for a tourist factoring in the cost of flights and hotels adds a lot to the price.
/// My mother only had a top set of false teeth from the age of 18, ///
I had my first denture (top set ) at the age of 13. Didn't lose any more teeth until in my fifties so by the time it became necessary for a few more to be fitted I was well used to a denture so it didn't bother me. I've yet to need a bottom plate.
