When I gave my date of birth the tone of the woman I was talking with changed. It was condescending, as though she was talking to an idiot.

If you jointly own the house or the mortgage is coming out of your partner's salary/income and not yours ie you don't have a financial interst in the house then the contract that you sign for the job can be repudiated by the other owner or by the mortgage payer. Its so that the sales person can do the pressure techniques and get a sale in what in other circumstances would have only been a quote visit. I used to be the one in my family who got the quotes for things simply because I was there more often than my husband so it was easier. I just used to refuse to deal with any company who said they needed to see both of us for whatever reason. I used to point out that I was only asking for a quotation visit and would not be agreeing any deals so why were we both needed. The honest folk would turn out the shysters would back out!
I understand that Woofy. But it has never happened before I was disabled. I've always been the one to pay all the bills and arrange finances etc. I've been the one doing all the work for loans, etc and all that has been needed is a signature from OH. And I told two bathroom companies that I only wanted a quote and they still wanted to ensure that OH would be there to approve. I wouldn't think that if a disabled man was dealing with the situation, they would ask for his wife's approval. I am wondering if I wasn't having a disabled bath, but just an ordinary bath whether they would want my OH to be there when they visited. In this case it's not so much about age as about disability and possibly gender. I have always been very independent and still am in my mind, if not in body!!
I remember once a situation where I had a mother and daughter looking for a bathroom replacement as they were both in wheelchairs. They knew exactly what they did and didn't want... and I was there when the sales rep arrived.
He spent the first couple of minutes suggesting he shouldn't go through it without the husband/father being there... although they were paying for it themselves.
Thankfully, the mum quite quickly said "it's up to us. Please leave now". Even then, he looked at me for confirmation and I just said "you heard her". So I can see how it happens.
