For those who may be interested, I received an email this morning.

Parliament is going to debate the petition you signed – “Ban fireworks for general sale to the public.”.

https://petition.parliament.uk/archived/petitions/276425

The debate is scheduled for 2 November 2020.

Once the debate has happened, we’ll email you a video and transcript.

Sadly, I don't think they'll ban them. But fingers crossed.
I have always said they should not be available to the general public, organised displays only.
First two signatories listed as Catherine Wheale and Román Kandel.`
this is really good news but please please if you feel strongly about this, also sign the existing petition for a debate next year. If we want to make progress we need to keep the pressure on.
And I trust they'll opt not to chip further away at personal freedom. They've tried more than enough of that since the cov thing.
I don't understand your meaning O_G?
I don't see it as chipping away at personal freedom. It's more to lower the risk of them getting into the wrong hands.

Ever since one was let off by some thugs on my street which narrowly missed me, I've been against the sale to the general public.

Like last years petition it will be thrown out, it seems the "great and the good" arn't bothered by fireworks, but especially this year when all displays are cancelled due to covid, can you imagine the uproar that would create.
catswhiskas, if you look at the debate reports, year by year the rock rolls a little. It would have been lovely if the first time we had put in a petition and got to " considered for debate level" and then selected for debate (not all considered are chosen) it had resulted in legislation...but it didn't and we weren't really expecting it. last year, for the first time, reports were called for and completed. Local emergency services are more involved this year in terms of local authorities giving them extra powers against the misuse of fireworks. Each year more people sign the petition and the rock rolls a little further. Say not the struggle naught availeth.
PS this years will be the 4th debate which I believe is a record.
This should have been brought in 6 months ago to prevent gatherings. Too late now and I'm sure we'll see crowds of 'partygoers' on Nov 5th (and the adjacent weekends) leading to CV spikes and a rise in the R rate because of idiots.
Sadly there will be loads more 'private' bonfire parties this year due to cancellation of public events. They are the ones we need to control - unregulated displays that can go on for weeks. The mindless thugs letting them off in the street at all hours cause so many problems for people and animals who can at least prepared for organised displays in their areas.
ZM, what should have been "brought in"?
