why do alot of people these days say that abbreviations are acronyms??

such as this: I was watching click on bbc news 24 and the woman presenting said that an acronym was wdydwyd. Which is quite obsurd. Why on earth do more and more people think that anything remotely like that is an acronym???

why do you do what you do. I think, strictly speaking, it is an acronym; but the word is more commonly used for abbreviations that are pronounceable as a word themselves (eg scuba but not BBC).

I immediately thought on "What did you do wi yir day?"

Looking on the Internet it also means "What do you do!What do you do!"

If pushed to pronounce it, I'd say "Woodeedwood" which is no worse than "wizzywig" for WYSIWYG (What you see is what you get.)

wdydwyd is not an acronym an abbrev is smthng whch is shrtr than the orig like phone while an acro is sthng which uses the initial letter of each word to form something that can be pronounced as a word eg NATO or LASER. I quite like thecorby's woodeedwood but it has added some extra vowels whereas wysiwyg could be pronounced if you really must do such a thing. I'm sure the woman said that wdydwyd is an acronym rather than an acronym is wdydwyd btw
