Echo Dot.

I already have an Amazon Alexa but 'er indoors has asked for an easy to use radio system in the spare room while she's ironing my shirts, making the beds, hoovering the carpet etc. She only listens to Radio 4, local radio and Classic FM.

What I'd like to know is:
1. Will the Dot provide those requirements without any subscription ?
2. Does the Dot work independently of the standard Alexa, or is it just an extension speaker?

Yes it will. It can act independently of the other one or you can link them

We have 2 dots, use them mainly as a clock, we do not have Alexa. Just got Mr U to pop upstairs and ask it to play radio 4 and it was successful.
You can set it up by loading the app on your phone. We do not lay any subscriptions for it, but it will play the music from subscription services we have got by linking them to the app.
