When I was young I remember my mother washing the clothes in the sink, then putting them through the mangle to get the excess water out. Later on she would iron them with an electric iron which was plugged into the light after taking the bulb out. We had a rented house, the toilet was at the bottom of the garden, and the cold water tap (the only tap we had) was outside.

Everyone was the same so I didn’t feel hard done by. This was in South Wales and we lived right by the steelworks and the railway line

Was the summer of 1945 and Germany had surrendered V.E day, the war was over and the whole country celebrated. I was 11years of age, a precocious Jack the lad sort of boy.
Each street organised a party with tables, chairs, food that was available each household giving sandwiches and bottles of "pop." Music was laid on and a microphone offered to anyone who cared to contribute a song.
This 11 year old youth took the microphone and beltedout his rendition of ......GALWAY BAY...and that little boy was your much loved and admired.......sqad.
Lol at Mamya.
bobbie22, I noticed that your old school had changed to flats and mine had also been pulled down and has now been rebuilt as a Welsh School. Also many empty shops but that is the same everywhere.

237SJ, I went to a funeral in North Devon a number of years ago as wife has many relatives there and I have never known a place so cold. I once spent a winter in the artic and wasn't as cold as I was in Torrington.
