Thanks for agreeing. There's a lot to unpack there but I'll try to propose a different view:

1) This wasn't about protection, Moses attacked the Midanites not the other way round.

2) The Midanites weren't just reprimanded, they were exterminated, everyone was slain, every man, woman and child. Apart from.. Virgin women.

3) Surely God the omnipotent being doesn't need Moses to go and do things on his behalf.

Alternative view:

Moses fancied the Midanites resources, wealth and women so he used God's name to go and do what he wished with them. Just like other humans have done for centuries as described in your original post.

Okay so far we've had:

OP: God doesn't get involved in human wars

1: God tells Moses to go to war (Numbers 31:1-4)

2: Agreement that God does get involved in human wars, but when the others did something naughty

3: God says not to exact wrath on naughty people, he'll do that himself (Romans 12:19)

Can you see how it's very easy for God's name to get associated with any war with all those mixed messages going on? It's the reason the Bible is not the best source of morality.
