Side effects from Microgynon 30

Hello, can anyone give any advice about the possible side effects of the combined contraceptive pill Microgynon 30? I've been taking it for nearly 2 years now and for the past year or so i have noticed my sex drive completly vanishing. I am 24 years old and mostly fit and healthy. At first i just thought it was due to being tired in the evenings but then i started getting worried about it and now its making me down. I have no desire whatsoever to do anything intimate and although my partner of 3 years is great about it and tells me not to worry, i feel terrible about it, for him aswell as myself. I know that this can be one of the side effects of taking this type of pill but i started to think i was going crazy and i was a freak and i'd need sexual therapy (!!). Should i try another pill or the depo injection? My periods are quite 'calm' with taking this pill and its great to know when they'll be coming so i'd like something that'd keep them 'calm' if poss?? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!! Thank you :-)

This happened to me too.

I becamse uninterested in sex, and because I wasn't naturally lubricated it got to be uncomfortable, which meant I dreaded it. Never though that it could happen to me.

Now I've been off the pill for over 3 months and my periods are not as bad as I remembered, my interest in sex is much greater and I really enjoy it when it happens. I'm sure I should try other pills but we're getting on really well with condoms. Boyfriend used to hate them but now he thinks they're great - at least this way he gets some!

It's not just you - this is pretty common with Microgynon. Definitely adds to its efficacy! But a huge, massive bad effect on your relationship. Go and see your GP.

Yeah this sounds very familiar. You should go to the doctor and ask for a different one. It seems that everyone gets put on microgynon 30 at first, but doctors have always asked me if I'm happy with it or whether I want to try a different one. When I first went on it the doctor told me that there were about 30 different brands and that if I suffered from any of the side effects it was no problem to keep on trying other ones until I was happy. Lots of my friends have been through various brands - I think it's an accepted thing to work through them until you find the best, so if I were you I'd tell the doctor you'd like to try another one, and I'm sure he'll be fine with it.

Thanks for your response! Think i'll have to go see my doc! Don't like condoms at all, too uncomfortable so maybe a change of the pill would be an idea? I like the idea of the depo injection cos then i don't have to think about taking my pill every morning!!

This sounds like i have written it i have exactly the same thing and when reading the side effects the other day i had 6 out of 7 of them 7th being something to do with contact lenses but i dont wear them. I went to the doc and she didnt do anything about it so will go back and nag. glad im not the only one, and uve got a good bloke there nice and understanding

i became very agressive on this pill. i changed and i was fine - try out a few other brands, and be careful of the depo - i developed anxiety and paranoia.

This happened to me a few years ago, I was only in my early 20's and if you had told me at the time that I would never have sex again, I honestly wouldnt have cared. This happened to me when I started using Depo injection though, so that might not be the best option for you.

I have now got the implant in my arm and have never had any problems with it :-) talk to your doctor /family planning clinic

I also experienced absolutely no sex drive on depo-as mycatis said, I too couldn't have cared less if I had sex again (and this is soo not like me). Effects everyone differently though I suppose. I'm back on microgynon now and noticed I do have less desire than when using no body meddling hormones at all, but it works and I'm too lazy to try other methods! It might be a case of swapping your pill to another brand?

Microgynon send me absolutley loopy!!!!!!!!! I was on it for 2 months and for the 1st month i thought that it was just down to changing pill. But by the 2nd month my boyfriend was practically marching me back to the doctors. I was moody irritable shouted at everything and cried over the smallest thing. I had never had this problem before with a pill and even though im a mardy cow at times that was rediculous. I tried Depo for about 9 months and while its fantastic no periods and not having to remember to take the pill i wasnt happy with me not being able to stop taking it if i wanted too. Im now on a puple pill but ive forgoten the name and its great no mood swings minimal periods and ive lost weight while ive been on it.

oh my goodness. I have been on microgynon 30 for 8 years. (started on it as a virgin to regulate periods). I knew my low interest in sex wasn't "normal" but for me I've never known anything different and I wasn't aware that it could be a side effect. My partner too is very understanding but I think it's time I went and spoke with my doctor.
