If you MP3 device has no headphone socket then it's unlikely to have a built in amplifier so what you're trying to do can't happen. You will only be able to play your music via a stereo with USB connection.

It does have a headphone socket and works well via head-phones but the missus wants to listen via speakers whilst in kitchen etc...Tel

So you have a 3.5mm jack plug on your speakers.

And....

The MP3 player has a socket for a 3.5mm jack plug on it....

Why not try plugging the round peg into the round hole rather than trying to force it into a square hole....

USB is digital and 3.5mm outputs are normally analogue audio... So a simple cable won't do it?

I guess your MP3 player has a 3.5mm output, then your speakers have a male 3.5mm plug? Then you just need a 3.5mm coupler to convert it back to a female socket, with one of these:

Then just grab the length of audio cable you need, like these:
